Questions and answers

What people ask Jay.

Plain answers about what a check covers, timing, refunds and your documents. Anything else: hello@checkmycontractor.ca.

What a check does

What does a check actually look at?

Each check does one of these. Before they come over: the company's business registration, its city licence where the city has one, its trade licence if the work needs one, public complaints and court records, and what it says about itself online. After they quote: all of that, plus a person reads your quote and the insurance papers. Every fact shows where it came from and when we checked.

Can I check a contractor before they come to my home?

Yes. After you pay, Jay asks if you have a quote yet. Pick “Check the company first” and give us the company name and city. We look up their licence, registration and public complaints. No papers needed. When the quote comes, use a second check on it. Both together are $69, or three checks are $99.

What does a check not do?

It does not grade, approve or reject a contractor, and it is not legal, insurance, engineering, tax, code or valuation advice. Nobody inspects the work, the premises or the workmanship, and we cannot guarantee price, schedule, quality or outcome. We also do not check workers' compensation clearance letters; you can ask your contractor for a current letter or request one from the board yourself. The decisions stay yours: the report gives you the evidence and the questions to ask.

What does “not found” mean in my report?

It means an official source was searched correctly and no matching record was located at that time. It is not evidence of wrongdoing. Plenty of honest businesses have no record in a given place: sole proprietors are not in every registry, many cities publish no licence lookup, and some work needs no trade licence. The report gives you the question to ask instead.

What do the other labels mean?

Verified: an official source shows it, with the source and time. From your documents: your quote or insurance papers show it, and we did not confirm it elsewhere. From you: you told us. Couldn't confirm: the information or access available was not enough to check. Does not apply: not relevant to this job. Ask about this: worth a question before you pay. Ask a professional: a lawyer, insurer or other professional is the right person to read it. “What the web says” is a section, not a label: what the business's own site and public listings say about it, shown with where it was found and never treated as verified.

Is AI involved?

Research assistants (AI software working under fixed rules) search the public records. They receive only the contractor's business details and the project's city and province, never your name, contact details or documents. AI never decides whether a contractor can be trusted, and a person reviews every Full Check before it goes out.

Do you take money from contractors?

No. We take no money from contractors. You pay for the check, and the report works for you.

Ordering and timing

Can I order a check now?

Yes. The Full Check is open in BC, Alberta and Ontario. One check is $39 CAD and covers one contractor. Three are $99. No tax added. A person reviews every Full Check before you get it. Unused checks from a pack wait on your account for 12 months. A cheaper check with results in minutes is coming later.

How long does it take?

Next-day release: when your order is paid and your quote is uploaded before 8 p.m. Pacific time, the full report is released to your portal by 8 p.m. Pacific time the next day, or sooner. After 8 p.m., it counts as the next day's order. Every calendar day counts, including weekends and holidays. The clock starts once your order is paid and your quote is in, or, for a company check, when you press Start. At very busy times the first results can take longer than usual. Your order is never dropped.

What if my Full Check is late?

If a Full Check's report is released after that time, we refund 50% of the price you paid for it (for a pack credit, 50% of one report's share of the pack price). Delivery is complete when the released report is in your portal; the email does not start, stop, or satisfy a delivery time.

What do I need to start?

Before they come over: the company name and the city. After they quote: the quote and any insurance papers too. A phone number or website helps us find the right company.

Jay couldn't find my contractor. What now?

The name on a quote is often a trade name, and the registered name can be different. Business registries cover corporations in every province, but sole proprietors and trade names only in BC. Look on the quote, invoice or the contractor's website for a legal name, a registration or licence number, or an address, and send it to hello@checkmycontractor.ca. If it changes a finding, you get an updated version of your report.

My upload failed. What should I do?

We accept PDF, DOCX, JPG, PNG and HEIC: up to 20 files, 20 MB each, 50 MB and 30 pages in total. If a file is refused, re-save it as a PDF and try again, or photograph each page separately. If the connection drops, nothing partial is kept, so upload it again. Please do not email documents to us; the upload keeps them in private storage in Canada.

Can I check more than one contractor?

Each check covers one contractor and, when you have one, one quote. Comparing quotes is a good habit: order one check for each contractor you are seriously considering.

Refunds

Can I get a refund?

Refunds: none for a change of mind once you've paid. After delivery, case by case under the terms. If what you send turns out to be outside what we check, you choose a full refund or a clearly described revised scope. A Full Check released after its promised time gets 50% of its price back. Write to hello@checkmycontractor.ca with your order number.

Do I have to withdraw a complaint or a review to get a refund?

Never. No refund is conditioned on withdrawing a review, a correction request, a complaint or honest feedback.

Your documents and privacy

Who sees the quote I upload?

The person reviewing your Full Check. Uploaded documents are stored privately in Canada and scanned for malware before anyone opens them. They are never sent to an AI or analytics company, never published and never sold.

Will you contact my contractor?

No. We never contact your contractor, insurer or references without your specific consent, and we never tell a contractor who ordered a check.

How long do you keep my documents?

Uploaded documents are deleted 30 days after your report is delivered, and reports 90 days after delivery. You can ask for earlier deletion, or an export of your data, at any time. Payment records are kept only as long as tax law requires.

What should I leave out of my uploads?

Government ID, banking details, credit reports, alarm or access codes, and unrelated financial statements. If one of your documents contains them, cover those parts before you upload. Your report does not need them.

Provinces

Which provinces can I order in?

BC, Alberta and Ontario. What counts is where the project is. Every other province and territory is still in research and cannot be ordered yet; join the founding list on the homepage to hear when yours opens.

Is coverage the same in every province?

Coverage by province: city licences for Vancouver, Burnaby, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge and Toronto; elsewhere the report says the city has no public lookup. Public records are Civil Resolution Tribunal decisions and BC Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judgments in BC. In Alberta and Ontario, court decisions are published only on CanLII, which can't be searched; public records there are the Government of Alberta's business enforcement list and Ontario's Consumer Beware List. Business registries cover corporations everywhere; sole proprietors and trade names only in BC.

Your report and corrections

I have a question about my report.

You can ask one clarification question within seven days of delivery. Write to hello@checkmycontractor.ca with your order number.

I think something in my report is wrong.

Send the finding and your evidence to hello@checkmycontractor.ca. Corrections with evidence are accepted at any time. A material correction produces a new, numbered version of the report, and the original is kept. Accurate public-record information is not removed simply because it is disputed.

I'm a contractor named in a report. How do I ask for a correction?

Write to hello@checkmycontractor.ca with the business name, the finding you are disputing and your evidence, such as a registration or licence number or a link to the official record. We review the specific finding and tell you the outcome. We cannot share the homeowner's report or say who ordered it.

Can I do these checks myself for free?

Yes. The same steps are published free in our guides for each province and city, with the official source for each one. A check saves you the afternoon and puts the results in one dated report.
