How do I check a renovator's licence in Brampton?

The City of Brampton licenses building renovators (roofers included) and several other home-service trades, and publishes a list of licensed businesses by name and address. A check takes a few minutes, and the Ontario steps follow.

The free steps

  1. 1. Start with the exact name on the quote

Write down the business name exactly as the quote prints it, including Ltd., Inc. or a number. A trade name, a numbered company and a sole proprietorship can all be registered under other words, so if a search shows nothing, ask the contractor which name and number appear on their registration or licence before you read anything into it.

  2. 2. Open the City of Brampton's business licensing pages

The stationary business licensing page lists the trades the city licenses: building renovators (roofing included), HVAC, plumbing, driveway, fence installation and pool contractors. It links the city's list of licensed businesses.

Official source: Stationary business licensing (City of Brampton; checked 2026-10-22).

  3. 3. Find the name on the list

Search the list for the exact name on the quote, then the trade name. The list shows the business name and address. Brampton licences expire each April 30, so check the list close to the date you sign.

  4. 4. Ask for the contract in writing

The city's licence requirements ask licensed renovators for a written contract, signed by both sides, with an itemized price, payment terms and an estimated completion date. Ask for one before any deposit.

  5. 5. Search the Ontario Business Registry

Match the licensed name to the registered name and the quote, and note the number and status.

Official source: Ontario Business Registry (Government of Ontario; checked 2026-10-20).

  6. 6. If nothing comes up

A business based in Mississauga, Caledon or Vaughan may hold its licence there. Ask which city issued it and the licence number, and ask the city's licensing office if the list and the answer do not match.

  7. 7. Know what the free search cannot show

A licence or a registration says the business holds permission under that name today. It does not show whether past work was good, whether the insurance is in force, or whether the quote covers what you think it does. Those are the insurance and quote steps, and they take a few minutes more.

No. Electrical contractors in Ontario are licensed by the ESA; search the business doing the electrical work there.
